ENGLISH ESSENTIALS CLASS
Welcome to a new school year! English Essentials is a course that is
designed to utilize a well-researched, highly successful program called Corrective Reading.
Students are placed in this course based on test results and teacher recommendation. Class sizes are kept low and students are expected to be motivated and energetic participants in their learning. Research shows that students who are not reading at grade level need intensive instructional support and intervention to make gains quickly. Corrective Reading uses a direct teaching approach and offers students both guided reading practice and independent reading practice each day. Engaging daily lessons are fast-paced and offer review of previously learned vocabulary, word study, fluency building activities, and comprehension practice. Students graph their progress which is very motivating to even the most reluctant readers. Frequent interactions between the teacher and students provide individualized corrective feedback and quickly address difficulties that students may have in decoding, comprehension or fluency. Students are “learning to learn,” which then carries over into their other core subjects and better prepares them for future success.
I am pleased to teach this successful reading intervention course at Kelly Middle School, and I know that it is making a difference in student learning. If you would like any further information on the design or rationale for this course, I would be happy to discuss it with you. I am looking forward to a terrific school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lisa Petrella
